A flying start

January 21, 2008

Only a week or so into the new term and already i feel swamped by an explosion of activity closing in from every angle. The “Wilson Gallery” shows are to start with regularity and the first is entitled “Abstraction”. I feel a need to exhibit my work, as I believe this will be the best opportunity for me to achieve a more objective view of my work, whilst at the same time being able to better contextualise the whole process. I attended a meeting of reps from each of the MA subjects and a brief discussion was held. I dont feel enough time was spent on the finer points, but I do appreciate that time is of the essence and a show needs to be organised, curated and hung in the space of a week, so deliberation and contest may be counter-productive. I have posted a request with Alain Ayers for plinths and DVD players and have had a meeting with him to get the ball rolling. I shall make myself available at certain points next week to help further with the setting up, but I have decided not to show any work at this show. I was interested in the theme because of my work involving very specific methods of abstraction. I am very much looking at the definition of abstraction as being a form of subtraction. Subtracting what is not needed and framing, focussing on or just hi-lighting what is core. This is what I have been doing with Moth and Tango. But I believe also that my work should be able to fit in to other themed shows as there are more facets to underline within the pieces.
As for the progress with my pieces, I am still on the verge of seeing through some of the experimentation that I flagged up from my previous films. I need toresolve these enquiries soon as I want to be working solidly on my final piece, and I also need to feel confident that this is underway. One final element to this final piece will be the quality aspect of the visuals. So far I have relied on, and been quite pleased with, the footage I have shot on my basic miniDV camcorder, but this could be improved by using 3chip cameras. Further to this, I would like to move away from the direct and clearcut methods of editing and introduce filers and the like. Thismay not work in the way I find pleasing, but at this stage I am too aware of what is going on on the screen regardless of how much I am cropping out. The introduction of ambiguity might be just what I need.

As for my forthcoming fight, i am now training with a pro, Dave, twice a week, along with my other conditioning sessions, and am feeling on top of my game. I got knocked out on saturday by a rather excitable heavyweight, so no moresparring with the big boys!

seconds out, final round

Christmas over, new year begun. Good. Over the break I have been busy on many levels, catching up with some paid work, decorating my own flat and spending some much needed time with my daughter and her brother. My boxing training suffered a little, but I suspect a break will prove to be beneficial. But alongside all these activities, I was also able to indulge in some “commercial” editing of boxing bouts for the BWCBF (British White Collar Boxing Federation). This I am doing in exchange for free membership. I have found this to be a hugely beneficial project, requiring a different approach to the editing process and allowing me to view aspects of “film-making” in a more objective way. The films usually consist of footage from three cameras (all 3 chip), and because of this, I have been able to gain more of an understanding of framing, staging and possibly more substantially, audio. As the cameras are placed away from eachother, the result is 3 very seperate examples of the “same” audio. All of this has been done using Fianal Cut, which has also thrown up the difference issues between Mac and PC, as I am delivering the edited files to PC only users.
I can see my knowledge of the boxing world/context expanding rapidly through this editing as the footage comes from all the bouts that I am employed to be time-keeper. So with this 3-camera footage and my ringside experience, I am able to analyse the activity of boxing in an unprecedented way. Add to that my education in boxing through my own ring experience…..
So as I approach my own entry into competitive boxing (15 February “St Valentines Day Massacre”), I am thinking as much about editing the footage afterwards as I am about what I am trying to achieve in my fight. This is a help right now as, without this distraction, I would have too much time to s**t myself.
A tangible level of reality has decended upon me regarding my first bout, and I am concerned. I do believe I can win, but no more than I believe it possible for me to lose. As a younger man, my opponent has more riding on a win, and I have an excuse for losing to a man half my age. But I fundamentally want to win and hope I am able to put myself in a position where I give myself the best possible chance of doing this.
