An update on my boxing progress. There is a “fight night” being arranged for approx 8 weeks time (date to be confirmed). I enthusiastically put my name down to be one of the competitors for the night, half thinking that they would find it difficult to find me an opponent of similar weight and experience. I have now been told that someone has stepped up to the “plate” who fits the bill. A 26 year old irishman who, and this has been said by several of the trainers, dosen’t have a massive punch, but is an excellent boxer! I shall now start to be scared…

June 13, 2007Further to my previous post, on the deliberations regarding my essay, I have found that my idea of establishing boxing within the art world as a practice in itself cannot be discussed. My talk regarding this with Paul Tebbs raised the issue that, albeit that there are many parallels with art practice and the act of boxing, art must come from an art context. Boxing is a sport and therefore can only come from a sport context. This I agree with and understand to be the case. My argument, and this is one that keeps me true to my desire to produce this written piece, is that a valid debate could be opened to discuss hypothetically whether, removed from its context (sport), and given the same definitive parameters as those of an art practice, boxing could be held alongside other art practices, as an art form.
I now wait in anticipation for my next chat with PT regarding this idea, and to see whether this concept can be discussed within the parameters and criteria of the essay brief.
